Shoulder tightness is something most of us will deal with at some point in our lives, and it’s often caused by a few simple yet overlooked factors. A lot of it starts with bad posture. If you’re hunched over your computer or phone all day, your shoulder muscles get stuck in a constant state of tension. This leads to tightness and discomfort, especially in the upper traps and neck muscles. It’s like the muscles are working overtime without a break.
Then there’s the repetitive nature of many everyday tasks. Whether you’re lifting weights, gardening, or reaching for something on the top shelf, your shoulders are constantly in motion. Over time, this repetitive use causes fatigue in the muscles, making them stiff and tight. Even something as simple as sleeping awkwardly can add to the strain on your shoulders, especially if you sleep with your arms in unnatural positions.
Let’s not forget stress – mental and emotional tension often shows up in the shoulders. Many people store their stress there, and it manifests as that tight, aching feeling we can’t shake off. With all the moving, lifting, and stress we put on our shoulders, it’s no wonder we experience discomfort. But here’s the good news: shoulder tightness doesn’t have to be something you simply accept as part of life. There are effective ways to alleviate the tension and restore your shoulders to a state of comfort and mobility.

Many people have tried different approaches, such as rest, pain medication, or injections, but sometimes none of these solutions are effective. So, how do we treat shoulder tightness?
At Progressive Therapy, we start with an hour-long evaluation to get to the source of the tightness. We pinpoint exactly where it’s coming from and measure the cause of both the tightness and the pain. During this evaluation, we’ll assess your posture, muscle imbalances, and movement patterns. Sometimes, the tightness stems from poor posture, overuse, or a combination of factors that are contributing to muscle tension. It’s important to understand what’s causing your pain so we can tailor a treatment plan that’s right for you. This thorough evaluation ensures that we’re not just addressing the symptoms but the underlying causes of your shoulder tightness.
Once we’ve identified the source of the problem, we move on to treatment. Our approach includes a combination of techniques designed to provide relief and restore function. We use heat to relax the muscles, along with electrical stimulation and ultrasound to promote healing and reduce inflammation. Iontophoresis, a method that uses electrical currents to deliver anti-inflammatory medication, is also part of the treatment plan when necessary. Along with these therapies, we perform massage, mobilizations, and stretches to increase mobility and ease tension.
When the pain starts to subside, we then move on to strengthening exercises specific to your needs. These exercises not only help prevent future injuries but also ensure that your shoulder remains stable and functional. We focus on strengthening the muscles surrounding the shoulder joint, helping to restore balance and mobility. This comprehensive treatment approach ensures your shoulder becomes not only pain-free but also stronger, more flexible, and ready for daily activities. With consistent care, you’ll see significant improvement in your range of motion and overall shoulder health.
