The Most Common Myths About

Shoulder Pain

You've Been Told By Doctors, Friends and Social Media That Have Led To More Pain

Here are some of the most common shoulder pain myths that people who visit Progressive Therapy in Pinecrest have been told, which have actually hindered their progress and delayed their recovery from the condition.

MYTH #1 - Rest Helps
One of the biggest myths I hear about shoulder pain is that rest helps. While rest may provide some relief during the acute stage of your injury, the pain will soon flare up after a few weeks once the condition has turned chronic. The truth is that exercise and targeted manual therapy are much more effective. We can help reduce inflammation, strengthen muscles, and improve joint mobility, all of which can help your shoulder pain go away permanently.
MYTH #2 - Shoulder Pain is Part of my Family History
Another harmful myth is that shoulder pain is just something that runs in the family and can’t be prevented. “My dad had shoulder pain, my grandfather had it, so I must also have it” they say. But that’s not true. Just because your dad or a close family member has experienced shoulder pain, doesn’t mean you have to suffer from it too. We can break that cycle and address the pain with the right approach. With the right treatment plan, it’s entirely possible to prevent or resolve the pain that may seem “genetic.”
MYTH #3 - It’s Part of My Job
Many people also believe that shoulder pain is just part of their job. Some assume that if they’re in a particular line of work, shoulder pain comes with the territory. Just because your job involves physical work, repetitive movements, or heavy lifting doesn’t mean shoulder pain is unavoidable. We can prevent shoulder pain with proper exercise, improved posture, and strengthening techniques that help you stay strong and independent in your daily activities. Whether your job involves heavy lifting or office work, a targeted approach can keep your shoulders healthy and pain-free.
MYTH #4 - Pain Medication is the Only Way to Deal With Shoulder Pain
A common myth that I encounter is that pain medication is the only way to deal with shoulder pain. Some people rely heavily on medications, thinking that’s the only option to manage their pain. While medications like Tylenol and ibuprofen can provide temporary relief, they don’t address the root cause of the problem. The reality is that therapy, stretching, strengthening, and manual techniques are far more effective in the long run. These approaches help tackle the underlying issues, improve your shoulder's function, and eliminate pain without the need for medication. We focus on natural, sustainable solutions that don’t rely on the temporary relief of pills or injections.
